Let me let you in on a little something I discovered.
Look at me for a second. Here I am, white skin, brown hair. Rounder face, bigger figure, baggy clothes. I'm one of those fat chics, one of the outcasts, one of the nerds. I'm Miss Goody-Two Shoes, I'm that one gal, I'm Miss Just One More Kid. That is what you see, that is what you assume.
What if I was black? What if I was a black girl with the same face, same perosnality, same everything, but instead my skin was a beautiful coffee latte.
What would you think of me? Would you assume I was Miss Good for Nothing? What would you think?
And If I was Asian? Would that make me smarter?
Mexican? Would you think I was an illegal immigrant?
If I wore glasses, would you guess I was smarter?
Or are you above that?
No. You aren't above it. No one is above stereotypes.
Do you know why?
First, there is the question of why we have stereotypes. Why do they exist? What purpose do they serve?
Human instinct.
The human mind wants to win. It's obsessed with 'winning'. When a human wins anything, from a race, to the lottery, to an argument, it gains some sort of power. It can be money, knowledge, or maybe you go higher on the social chain.
Yes. Humans instinct wants power.
Because the more power you have,
the safer you are. You have more food, wealth, everything, if you have more power.
So what does this have to do with racism?
Everything.
People put others down in their minds when they first meet them. So they can keep winning the invisible race of survival for whatever purpose. They single out anything different from themselves, and put it down in their minds as wrong, because after all, aren't they winning the 'race' wherever it may be?
Oh, she's fat Oh he's gay Oh she's blonde Oh he's black
Oh that sounds wrong
But there is a cure.
Knowledge.
It's a safe, easy way of getting power. Read a book, watch a documentary, go outside. Do anything. Every second, you're brain is sub-conciously gaining knowledge. If knowledge is your power, you won't feel the need to put others down, because you already have power.
Maybe, the world will learn that. Maybe...
But I doubt that.
